Music therapy is a research-based allied health profession, conducted by Registered Music Therapists who are trained at university level to address client goals through the use of music in the areas of psychological, social, physical, and spiritual functioning.
Research has shown benefits across all these areas with a wide variety of populations. In particular music therapy in oncology has shown benefits such as reducing pain, depression and anxiety, and enhancing relaxation.
Music therapy in oncology allows opportunities for emotional expression, movement, social communication and connection. This can include interventions such as playing and moving to music, improvising, listening to music, singing, song or lyric discussion, and songwriting.
